Decision on the content and images for all my pages

I have just finished creating my masthead (logo), layouts and house style. Therefore I will now start making all my decisions on the content that I will be including in the front cover, content page and double page spread. I will be developing my ideas on what I would be including in the double page spread and contents page.  The focus will be to make my overall outcome and decisions on what I have researched on R&B and other music magazines. This will include me refereeing to the survey responds, magazine analysis as this will help me create the best and most successful R&B magazine that links to my target audience.  I will also not be creating a free CD this is because throughout my research none of the R&B magazine I analysed included free CD therefore I will follow this convention.

Front cover page
I will start by referring to the research I conducted throughout the course on the different music magazine and mainly R&B. The centre image will be of an R&B artist and the main cover will be his name ‘Matt Blake’. The main cover line will be placed in the centre towards the bottom of the cover as this is the conventional place I saw it in when analysing R&B magazines. Therefore I will need to follow these key conventions in order to have a successful outcome.
I will also include other cover lines such as:
  • A pull quote she’s the reason behind my lyrics’ This is to engage the reader and make them want to buy the magazine in order to find out what it’s about. I have also seen this in previous R&B magazines therefore I decide to add one to my front cover as its effective. This also gives the reader an idea about what the cover story will be about.
  • Skyline ‘R&B goes oft, John Ledgend, NE-YO and Lloyd try to get it up’ this will grab the audience attention as more R&B artist are mentioned and this may be one of their favourites. So for that reason they know the magazine will include a lot more features on other artist, making them want to by the magazine to find out more. As the skyline doesn’t give too much away, but just enough to make the viewer feel curious.
  •  Cover line 1- ‘Killer app summit-Newsmakers, winners from mobile entertainment, live’ this will engage my target audience a lot as they are quiet a young age and they are really interested in apps, entertainment, winning and live feature. Therefore including this cover line will grab their attention on winning something and knowing the latest news and apps.
  • Cover line 2- ‘usher’s exes will.i.am: the future of music + Alicia keys gives up the goods’ this will engage my audience because as young people they want a little bit of gossip and personal information about their favourite artist. Therefore by adding this it will enable to please a lot of my target audience, as I have seen these type of cover lines on existing R&B magazines when researching.
  •   Cover line 3- ‘win- 2 free tickets to Matt Blake’s concert’ winning something will definitely allow the audience to approach and buy the magazine. This is because most of my target audience said they wanted a free or winning feature in the magazine when conducing my questionnaire. Therefore I have included this cover line to grab their attentions on winning tickets to one of the best R&B singers. I have also decide on making the audience win something and not add a free feature with the magazine because when researching none of R&B magazines had this. So for that reason I needed to follow the codes and conventions and at same time please my target induce. So at the end I diced to this as it follows the conventions and pleases my audience, because though my research I saw some of these types of cover lines included.
  •  Cover line 4- ‘Your turn- who is the best R&B artist ever? You decide’. I included this cover line because it will enable the audience to interact with the magazine, which will show the audience they have a say and they can always be involved in the magazine not only read it, which will make them want to buy the magazine monthly.
  •  Main cover line- ‘Matt Blake’ this is the name of my artist that the main image will be taken off. I chose to do this for my cover line because through most of my research and R&B magazines, they all had their main cover line as the artist’s name that is on the front cover. This is a convention in R&B magazine therefore I need to follow it in order to produce a professional and successful magazine. This will also grab the audience attention as it is a famous singer.

Images
I will be taking picture of Yousif, the shot will be a medium shot. This will pretty much take up the entire front cover. He will be looking directly at the camera, his gesture will be him standing up straight with his hands folded. I will also be trying other poses however this is the one I will be using most likely. This is because it really emphasis the R&B personality and engages with the reader. The image will be taken in black and white and some in colour, however it will be more likely I just the black and white image because it makes front cover more sophisticated and I have seen many R&B magazines using black and white images, which I loved as the image stands out more and the details a brought out more than coloured images. I will be taking the image in the studio as the lighting and the back ground is perfect. Also if I needed to edit the background on Photoshop it will be very quick and easy for me to do, due to the white background.

Contents page
From the research I conducted I decided on making my magazine consist of 60 pages long. This is because I wanted it to be short, as my target audience are 16 to 24 years old they wouldn’t want to go for thick magazine as they will get bored and become uninterested. This is similar to some of the magazine I was looking at for my research their target audience is 25 years old, therefore they only had around 59 pages in their magazine. However magazines like Billboard their target audience are 34 years old their magazine consisted of way more pages. Also in Vibe magazine they have around 100 pages and spread it out into two content pages, however, for my magazine I am going to have less than that which is 60. This is because my target audience are much younger therefore they can get bored easily and won't want to read or finish of the magazine. I have gone against the conventions of including two contents pages because it will confuse my audience and bore them as I mentioned before they are young. Not only that but one contents page is enough this is because I have much less pages which all fit into on contents page. Adding on to that, it is not entirely going against the convention this is because throughout me research on music magazine many have used only one contents page especially with younger audiences. So by doing this will also be attracting my target audiences and keeping them interested and entertained.

During my research I found that my target audience were most interested in a music magazine is interviews with artists and upcoming events. Therefore I will be planning to put these two feature under the features column as I would like to have a few features on these features. The other content will placed under the features column. Through my research on R&B magazine I found out their contents pages only include features column and 1-3 pages on fashion. However in the questionnaire I conducted my target audience said they wanted reviews as it interested them a lot. Therefore to please and engage my target audience and keep on track with the codes and conventions of an R&B magazine I will add only 2 pages one reviews. This will allow me to give my target audience what they are interested in and I won’t be going totally against the conventions of the R&B magazines.

Images
I am planning to take a long shot of Yousif which is the same artist that will be on the cover and double page spread, this is to show that this is the cover story. The gesture of the image will be Yousif standing and a women’s hand wrapped around his shoulder with a heart. This will give a hint to the viewer what the double page spread will be about (love) and this also relates to R&B is mainly about women. I will not be adding any other smaller images, this is because while searching through R&B magazines such as Vibe and others most of their content pages contained of one main image, it also keeps the focus on that image and the text. I will be taking the image in the studio due to the lights and background, as it will allow me to edit the background easily when using Photoshop and then placing it on to InDesign.

Double page spread
The double page spread will be about the artist on the front cover and content page. My double page spread will focus on the artist that is on the other pages, it will be an interview that will be about him and his music. This will interest the audience because through my research I found out they like to read interviews and know knew things about the artist and this is what I will be including in the interview. I will do this interview by making a Q&A with the artist which is a common convention in R&B magazines such as Vibe. I will advertise this in my content page as it’s the main feature in the magazine. That questions will be all about the artist and his music; the questions will have to be interesting as people want to know knew things and not stuff they already know, in order to engage them and make them want to read on.  It will also include questions to do with his album and the mean behind it.

Image
For the double spread image I am going to take a medium shot of the artist. I will be taking the photo in the studio because the lights and background will be perfect, as it will help me Photoshop it. The pose will be him sitting down and a girl stand up facing him. This will be placed on one side of the page as the other side will be the writing. I will only be adding this pain image and no other images, I decided on this layout and design because when I analysed existing R&B double page spreads a lot of them did this type of theme.

House style for my magazine

In this post, I will be discussing the house style for my music magazines; which is the main aspect to look into before producing a magazine.

Front cover, contents page and double page spread layout ideas

Now I have finished my research, so for this lesson I began to create drafts of the layouts for my music magazine. When I was creating these layouts I had to use the criteria list that we made before hand. This is because it helps me use the ideas from the research I done and apply it to my own R&B music magazine. This would also help me decide where to locate different elements on the front cover, contents page and double page spread. while creating them i had to really think about where to place things and make it look professional, as I have put a lot of thought into the layouts while producing them. I have also produced the measurements that i should make, therefore it will be straight forward for me when actually constructing my magazine on InDesign. My main aim is to follow the codes and conventions of an R&B music magazine in order to have a professional and successful magazine.
These are the layouts I produced:

Target audience analysis- Vibe magazine

Vibe magazine - target audience analysis

As Vibe magazine is the same as my genre I decided to research on their target audience just how I have previously done for my the other fourth magazine genres. I thought is very useful as I am able to compare it with other genres that I have analysed and will help me follow the conventions for my magazine as I am ding the same genre. I have also analysed many Vibe magazine in order to help further with the creation and planning of my magazine. I haven't created language features into double page spread because I have already done many for the other fourth magazine which will help me a lot. This is because in terms of the features in the double page spread its similar in all genres, I have noticed this from the research I did on the fourth different genres and most the language features that were used were the same. However I will still research about it more, even though I have analysed many Vibe and R&B double page spreads which helped me a lot.

Price
 £4.00 per month
Advertisers (mag)

Albums: the magazine is about R&B and Hip-Hop music, therefore the magazine updates the readers with new music albums. For example, Kesha, Jason Deurol’s latest album, Rihanna and Drake brand new collaboration album, Justin Timberlake’s album.

Reader Interaction
The reader’s interaction for this magazine is that readers are able to send emails through Vibes website. This enables them to communicate with the magazine. Through these emails they are able to send their feedback and share their opinions or even comments on improving the magazine. They are also able to do this through Vibe social media apps, such as Facebook or Instagram or Twitter which is known as cross media convergence. This not only does it enable the audience to send messages but to all as a group/club combine together and comment on features they like or don’t like. They are able to see some parts of the magazine and everyone can like or comment their thoughts, which Vibe can take on. Vibe target audience are very capable of this as they are old enough to have these websites. These techniques are very helpful allowing everything and the magazine and audience to interact with one and another.
Promotions & Competitions
The magazine contains a lot of promotions. For example, they offer a monthly subscription allowing the audience to get the magazine every month as soon as it is published. Therefore if the audience forget to buy it or don’t have time, it won’t matter as it going to be sent to their house. Also they give their loyal reader discounts so they are able to get the magazine for cheaper. The audience are also able to when different features. For example, free tickets to a concert, holidays to other countries or even behind the stage with an R&B or Hip-Hop artists.
Content
The content includes, interviews, latest albums, news about singers, keeping up with latest music. For example, interviews with an artist about their music album, future plans and exclusive information. The magazine included an interview with Chris Brown’s latest album. This included new exclusive features that the artist never said before. Also reviews on the album and his future plans. They do similar things with other artist that are within their genre or an artist that is in the R&B or Hip-Hop genre which may have collaborated with another artist that is a different genre or together.

Market Segmentation

Demographic

The demographic is for affluent adults aged 18-34 who have an avid interest in R&B and Hip-Hop music, 55% men and 45% women. They receive a disposable income, which they are usually in the B-D sector, this is due to the advertisements inside the magazine. The ethnicity of the readers is both white and black audiences. This is because of the artist advertise which are both races.
Geographic

The magazine is targeted towards an audience in the USA and UK, this is because many of the concerts and advertisements are all around these two countries. Also many of the events and concerts advertised are located in and around the UK and USA, in places such as London, Wales, Las Vegas, New York which is probably where most of the readers of Vibe live near. However, the magazine does cover a lot of international, experimental artists and since the magazine is multinationl, it reaches people outside the UK and USA, such Canad, etc.
Psychographic

Readers of Vibe are likely to be mixture of succeeds and mainstreams as they will have some disposable money to be able to buy the Vibe magazine every month. But also, Vibe is seen as the one of biggest R&B and Hip-Hop music magazine around, covering the biggest and latest music trends, which is clearly what many of their readers are interested in finding out about; they like to be aware of the latest music news so as to be more informed than their friends. Explorers will also seep in there, too, as the magazine covers many new album releases.

Further analysis on Vibe magazine

About Vibe
Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Qunicy Jones, lunched in 1993. The publication predominately features R&B and Hip-Hop music artist, actors and other entertainers. Production shut down in Summer 2009, however Vibe purchased by private equity InterMedia Partners. It is now issued quarterly with double covers, with a larger online presence.

Th magazine's target audience demographic is predominately young followers of R&B culture between the ages of 18-34. Vibe magazine's distribution is largely through Vibe's very own website however it can be found at selected stores.

Analysis Vibe magazine
This cover of Vibe magazine used of rich and bold colour scheme, which emphasises Vibe's serious approach to music. The lack of variation in colour and excessive use of image allows the cover lines and main image to stand out and speak for themselves. This means the audience are drawn in and the attention is only on the music and artist. The target audience are young yet in a muter period. The audience are serious about music and wanting to be aware of both the music and and background of the artist. - this is successful and made accessible for the target audience as Vibe is mature, in depth music magazine.

The house style for this issue consists of the colours red, black, grey and white. These are bold colours and the there arrangement allowed each element to stand out. Not only that, but the reflect the target audience as these colours are far from bright and bubbly colours which are often found on magazines for younger audience. The contrast of the masthead Vibe is considered serious whilst remaining sleek. The contrast is also being incorporates everything into the product they deliver. The bottom of the lettering for the name has a fading effect into the white background and creates a professional, interesting look merging the masthead and background into one. this also suggest the masthead it will known therefore people do not need to see it all in order to know or read the name. this is reinforced due to the main image covering the masthead.

as for the main image it is very seductive, however Ciara's expression is playful which suggest this magazines appeals to both males and females. Even though there is a more masculine edge to this particular edition. The lack for props in this image and the plain white background allows the image to speak for itself. The use of Ciara being a singer in her twenties puts her in the prime position to be considered an icon/inspiration, if not already by the target audience of Vibe and so they can find her engaging. She is an R&B artist and again fitting for the genre of the magazine and the young people audience as to which having someone relevant allows existing audience as well as potential readers to be aware of what Vibe has to offer.

The pull out quote, "i'm not gonna hold back too much" this shows the familiarity between both the artists and target audience. it also grabs the audience attention allowing them to want to buy the magazine in order to find out more and what this famous quote is about. It is also related to  the main cover line we know this because it is said by the artist and her name is the main cover line. Also it is placed straight underneath the main cover line. In terms of colour the quotation marks in a different colour which is red where as the text is in black this makes it really stand out and show the audience it is a quote.

The cover lines- these are used to features to the magazine beside the main image and its article. Although these are not the focal part of the front cover they are just as important and are presented clear and bold enough gaining an interests and wider audience. he variation of size of text makes a contrast between each article being advertised and so some will stand out more than others depending on the importance. To grab the audience attention.

The masthead page follows other music magazines. This is because they have included part of the masthead in the contents page. For Vibe magazine they have added the letter ‘V’ with the background instead of having the full masthead at the top of the page. However, they do not always do this, because I have research and looked a lot more Vibe contents pages and at times they have both. For example, the masthead they place it in small at the top corner with the date underneath. I really like this idea and I may use it as inspiration for my magazine. Vibe magazine have two contents page however I am only analysing one because I will only be creating one. This is because my target audience are much younger therefore I having to many pages and repetitive loaded information may confuse them and they can get bored. Also as my magazine will consist of 60 pages therefore it should all fit into one contents page, whereas Vibe had around 100 pages.

The title of the contents page follows the house style as the colour is white. This is a convention because it shows the magazine It is professional and not too busy, it also allows the audience to easily tell which page is which and go through the magazine smoothly without any confusion.  The layout of this with the word ‘Contents’ broken up into sections adds an edge to the page and allowing Vibe to follow the conventions but yet develop it in their own way.  As for the backgrounds similar to the front cover this is because the black, white and grey colours merge together. Also the little use of props other images allows the central focus to be that of the image and content list.

The main image is of Ciara again, however in a different style and pose. She is laying down in heels and a body suit. This reveals her leg, which continues the initial mood that this issue will reveal information untold. The position of Ciara has her main body against the white/light grey section of the background this highlights her and put her at the attention of the readers. This also shows the readers the importance of her in this issue and so they are attentive as she is clearly the main selling point. The body suit worn by the artist I grey fitted with a nude belt; this fits into the house style and makes the overall image look a lot more professional. The consistency of the house style allows the page to flow from one to another. Often as I have seen in other contents page we normally see large writing of the editor’s in place. However, with Vibe magazine they do not include this typical feature and so we know the Vibe challenges some conventions and likes to be unique. I also like this feature which I may use for my contents page. Which suggests it’s a magazine that allows the artists and music to speak for themselves.

As for the contents list, it is a very basic and straight forward point with little use of sub-headings. This makes the magazine easy to navigate through and avoids any complications when reading the features in the magazine. The style also fits into the house style and keeps an edgy and professional look. Avoiding too much colour keeps the contents looking mature and serious therefore readers will take this and read it. The two sub-headings are following by a small list of page numbers as to which each has a small caption of information about that specific article. The key words are highlighted in bold, this feature is used by magazines, this is because readers will be attracted to it instantly. Allowing them to have an idea about what the article will include instantly. For example ‘a band’ this will avoid them having to read the rest of the information as through this they will instantly know the article is of a band. The layout is very basic which enables the users to easily read through the contents and it is also clear and easily visible.

For the main image of Ciara one (large image) is continued from the front cover. Even though she is not in the same pose as she is standing up. She is revealing even more skin as she holds her hand to her face. this reflects the main cover line 'stand up! Ciara'. This shows us as viewer she is putting herself in a vulnerable position as shes poses nude. However, it suggests that she stood up to reveal and speak something, which isn't easy to tell. For this image including props/costume, as for this image nudity, allows the mood from the front cover to follow onto her article. This keeps the professional look as it is consistent and she now reveals more skin relating to her revealing the truth. At the same time she looks seductive due to the heels, and the way she has posed. For the second image, this is different to the first image and front cover, as she is wearing a white shirt and look happy which shows a lot more energetic and displays her personality. By wearing a white shirt follows the house style keeping a professional look from page to page.

The background following what we saw in the front cover and contents page the colour is grey/white. This is because the page is about Ciara and so it needs to follow the other pages of her. However, the main lighting is around the text as to which Ciara is interviewed and speaks to the magazine. The use of white suggests positivity, this link to Ciara as she speaks of her new music venture. Without the use of colour or props this prides an intimate mood and without anything in the readers distraction, as it will only be about Ciara.

The layout is very spaced out and avoids a busy look. Just like the front cover, contents page this double page spread also looks very simplistic and each text and image is identifiable. the Sub-heading and bold text helps to make the key information for each section stand out. This is easy to identified as to what information can be found in each section. The house style remains the same, although it does include an additional of yellow bold text. This makes the double page spread stand out a little more, and adds a little more energy to the text, along side with Ciara's playful side as we see in one of the images.

Looking into different layouts

In this presentation I am looking into different layouts for front cover, contents page and double page spread. I looked at four different magazine Q, Kerrang, Vibe and Uncut. I this task is very useful because I was able to identify and explore various different layouts of a magazine feature. This will allow me to identity features which I will include in my own magazine. I am also able reach for some information and have a wider understanding on the positioning of the music magazine's positioning, as every details counts and has it's reason.

Language Feature
Purpose / Effect
Alliteration

This type of feature allows the person to easily remember the phrase. This is because the sound pattern makes the text more interesting, for example, ‘contrasting cool’ makes the reader feel more engaged with the text, and the phrase will tend to stick in the reader’s head more.
Informal language

The article has used this because it allows the readers to fully understand the content of the article. Also, this adds a flow and rhythm to the text, making it easier for the reader to read it. For example one of the artists says, “I miss being f*cked up”. This shows that the artist is showing this to his fans as they know him very well therefore this will engage them more to the context as they will want to know the reason behind this sentence making the situation more dramatic and engaging.

Emotive language
